Magazine Design

Evaluation

Overall, throughout this project I have learnt about various magazine covers and how they are made to look very professional. There are various types of media techniques which make the magazine covers look there best and also attract the readers well. For example some techniques include key signifier, puffs, buzz words, mode of address, superimposition and more. All of these techniques also help appeal to the target audience, which is whatever the magazine bases it around, which could be women aged 20-30 or men aged 40-50 etc. However, in my magazine the target audience in boys aged around 12-20 because the genre stands out to them the most. The colour ,or contrast, of the magazine also refers to the target audience where as pink shows that the magazine could be targeting women mainly and blue which could possibly show the purpose is to attract men’s attention. However, the colour is similar to the key signifier because it makes the magazine look a lot more exciting, unless it’s a dark topic where as the background colour could be black.

From this project I have also learnt about camera shots/angles and how they are very important in magazines. For example if the magazine topic is on superheros, like some Empire magazines, than you could use a camera angle called Low angle which makes the hero look very heroic and special, rather than just a normal close-up.

Overall, I have worked hard on this magazine to make it look professional and perfect.Screen Shot 2018-10-24 at 09.37.58.pngThis is my magazine towards the end and nearly finished completely. I have changed the background fully to make it look better and made the fonts look better than the other boring ones. Screen Shot 2018-10-22 at 09.24.55.pngThis is my magazine when its still being developed and as you can see its very colourful and detailed with a lot of information but still not finished yet as it isn’t really looking like a magazine cover.Birmingham LivingThis is how the magazine was started and as you can see its not very detailed as its being developed and built at the moment. The colours are very dull and boring but will be changed.Screen Shot 2018-10-05 at 09.44.09.png

Annotated version of my rough sketch, looking decent as it is successfully progressing on each time. I’ve added some details to the simple title to make it clear on what I’m planning overall. IMG_1584.JPGThis is a rough sketch of my magazine cover, no captions included in this yet but its looking satisfactory so far. I will change some of the features as they don’t look as professional.IMG_1583.JPGYoung & Rubicam’s 4 C’s Cross Cultural Consumer Characterisation, Helps Break Down The Target Audience. This Can Be Extremely Important In Magazines As The Target Audience Is Really Important And Is One Of The Key Things. The audience is one of the key things you need to focus on, in a magazine, as its a lot more organised and the magazine isn’t targeting multiple age groups and genders it’s only focused on one. Y&R.jpgThese are all the different types of camera angles used in movies to explore all the angles of a movie scene. Very important as they portray the scene to the audience and show facial expressions, movement etc. 50d10db7b67f7029369f5a1e2b875eed.pngClassic Demographics,  Showing Examples Of The Different Types Of Working Classes.

Magazine Analysis.jpgImportant Titles:

Costume – What the actors wear and they use different costumes for different scenes. For example, in movies costumes are key for analysing the characters and understanding their roles in the movie.

Camera – Exposes photographic film to light. Important as this is used to film the scenes in the movie and the main thing that entertains the audience.

Lighting- Shows the scene to be bright or dull. Very important as the lighting in the scenes must be spot on so the characters look there best and professional for the audience.

Angle – Marks the specific location at which the movie camera is placed. The angles are very important when shooting the films as if you use only some angles people will loose interest in the film, whereas if you use multiple angles they will be more interested and have a better image of the scene. The different angles create different points of views on the scenes.

Actors(Talent) – A person who portrays a character. These are what make the films popular and entertaining as without the actors the film will have no purpose and therefore not be watched.

Movement – The position of an actor or the camera. This is important as when recording the films the movement is key as these make the camera angles better, for example the crab is great at clipping low shots.

Make Up – The image of a character shown to the audience. This is a key part in a movie as the make up is what makes the characters adapt to the scenes and look their best.

Position – The positioning of the shot or actor/actress. This links to the angles as the position a character stands in is important when filming a scene as it says a lot about their part in the play and is more organising.

Props – The props are what make up the scenes as they are usually things like guns or objects used to help evaluate the scene. These are key because the scene wouldn’t be the same without props as they give the audience an idea of whats happening.

Shots – A series of frames. The shots are important as they are always supposed to be perfect and professional so the “shot” looks better.

Setting – The place or surroundings of somewhere. The setting is very important as it shows the audience where the scene is located and also where the movie is based around. It is also like Mise-En-Scene as this is the background of somewhere.

Magazine Design.

From these images I explored various different types of camera angle shots, for example I used long shot, close up, extreme close up, medium shot, over the shoulder shot and more. These are very important when taking photos, as the angle has a big effect on the picture because it can change a lot. For example, the low angle shot makes the person look bigger than they are. These are key in magazine covers as the key signifier will be shot on an important angle, like a close up.
